Introduction of Tomato:

Scientific Name: Solanum lycopersicum

                   Botanically, a tomato is a fruit, a berry, consisting of the ovary, together with its seeds, of a flowering plantTomatoes are bush types that grow 2-3 feet (60-90cm) tall, then the buds at the ends of all the branches form flowers instead of leaves. They flower all at once, set and ripen fruit, then die. Many hundreds of cultivar varieties with different type and size, either organic, hybrid or genetically modified are being in use. Tomato, a pulpy nutritious fruit commonly eaten as a vegetable.

History of Tomato: 
                    The word "tomato" comes from the Spanish tomateThe scientific species epithet lycopersicum means "wolf peach", and comes from German werewolf myths. These legends said that deadly nightshade was used by witches and sorcerers in potions to transform themselves into werewolves, so the tomato's similar, but much larger, fruit was called the "wolf peach" when it arrived in Europe. 

Varieties of Tomatoes:
                   Most cultivars produce red fruits; however, a number of cultivars with yellow, orange, pink, purple, green, or white colors are also a common scene. Along with those colors come a range of flavors.


Benefits of Tomatoes:
                 The tomato has a much lower sugar content than other edible fruits, and is therefore not as sweet. 

 An excellent source of vitamin C and other antioxidants, tomatoes can help combat the formation of free radicals known to cause cancer.

The fiber, potassium, vitamin C and choline content in tomatoes all support heart health.
